Posted May 01, 2019 12:03:59 As the world braces for a major wildfire season, Google Maps has released an interactive map that allows users to explore areas of the country that are currently at high risk of severe wildfires.
Google Maps users can see the area affected by the large-scale wildfires in the northern California region, and the southern California region.
The interactive map, created by Google Maps user Dan Haines, is based on fire data from the National Weather Service (NWS).
The NWS provides climate-related information to the US government.
“This map shows the area where large wildfires are active at any time,” said the Google spokesperson, “including the area around Lake Tahoe, in the San Francisco Bay area and in the southern part of the state.”

The area in the upper right corner shows the areas that are at or near the high-risk category.
“The area where fire is currently active in the California region is shown in orange, and in yellow is the area that is at or around the high risk category,” Hain, the developer of the map, wrote on Google’s blog.
Hain says he and his team worked with NWS to create the map.
The map shows areas where large wildfire activity is currently occurring.
The areas that appear red are at risk.
Firefighting crews are currently fighting a wildfire in the western Mojave Desert.
“We created this map to help communities understand what areas are at high or high risk, so that they can plan ahead for their own survival,” said Hain.
“If you need a map for your community, please check out this interactive map.”
The map has been downloaded more than 10 million times.
The maps are currently available for free download from Google Maps, the company said.
Fire maps were a key feature of the Obama administration’s 2016 disaster declaration.
As part of that declaration, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) required all states and the District of Columbia to compile fire data and publish it on a daily basis.
The EPA said the information is used to identify regions that are most vulnerable to wildfire and help communities prepare for the wildfire season.
The National Interagency Fire Center is responsible for managing the wildfire data.
The NRC is also responsible for producing the NWS data.
Hains’ map was inspired by a 2015 map created by the US Geological Survey (USGS).
The USGS created a map showing wildfires in Oregon and Washington State in May of 2016.
