Aussie journalist John Maitland, author of the controversial New India map, is the new leader of a group that says it is aiming to set up an Australian branch of the Global Centre for Climate and Energy Solutions.
“I am very excited about this project,” Maitlands told the ABC.
“I’m just really excited about it, the idea that the Australian government could actually set up a centre in New Delhi, in New Zealand, in Australia.”
The organisation is hoping to raise $US1 million in funding to set it up, which will have a staff of about 40.
The centre will provide a portal to data and analysis that would allow scientists and governments to better understand the effects of climate change and what the impacts are in Australia.
The idea for the new Australian centre came about while Maities research was continuing at the University of Queensland, and he found that there was a lack of information about the impacts of climate and energy change on Australia.
“So I just thought, why not just have this centre where the Australian science community can really get together and talk about the issues,” he said.
Maitlands group says the centre will help Australia to better cope with climate change, including developing energy technologies to meet its energy needs and making more efficient vehicles.
Australia has been under a period of unprecedented pressure from the impacts climate change has had on the country.
Australian PM Malcolm Turnbull, who has been a vocal proponent of climate action, said that his government would be looking at how the Australian climate change policies could help its country.
“Climate change is real, it’s happening now, and it’s a very serious threat,” he told Sky News.
But Maitles organisation has also criticised Turnbull’s stance.
“What we have been seeing is that the prime minister has actually been very open and receptive to the climate change agenda of his government,” he explained.
In a statement on their website, the Climate Change Coalition said the new centre would provide an opportunity for Australians to come together to share their ideas on the environment and climate change.
It said the centre would include scientists and engineers, as well as people from the community, and would “work to develop the best scientific and technical solutions to the environmental challenges we face.”
“Climate is real,” Mittermeier said.
“It’s happening, it is a very real threat, and the best way to deal with it is to deal as a nation, not as individuals.
